It has been brought to our attention that the owners of missing animals are being contacted by scammers pretending to be Baldivis Veterinary Hospital.

The scammers are pretending that the missing animals have been handed into the hospital and are asking for veterinary bills to be paid immediately over the phone.

If you have reported or posted a missing animal online and receive a similar phone call, please hang up and call the clinic number directly on +9524 1466.

With the onset of this warmer weather, our snake friends are beginning to become more active 🐍

As such, it is important to recognise the signs of snake bites in our feline and canine family members 🐱🐶

Snake bite reactions vary and may not appear clinically significant for up to 24 hours after the bite. Therefore, it can be difficult to know if your dog/cat has been the victim of a snake bite.

In a snake bite situation every second counts. Therefore, it is important that you act on your suspicions. Please call your veterinary hospital when you are on the way so the team can prepare for your arrival.

Signs of Snake Bite:

-Sudden collapse followed by apparent recovery
-Lethargy
-Muscle tremors, shaking and reduced eye blinking
-Dilated pupils
-Sudden onset of weakness/wobbliness/shaking at the limbs
-Complete paralysis
-Sudden loss of bladder and bowels
-Irregular bleeding from the nose, bite site, mouth
-Discoloured, dark, bloody urine

If you suspect your pet may have been bitten:

-Do not panic, try to stay calm and quiet
-Do not try to clean wound or bandage (time is of essence)
-Call the veterinarian hospital and notify them of your arrival
-Present to your veterinarian as soon as possible

Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of snakes on your property

-Keep your property free from rubbish piles.
-Keep your grass/paddock areas cut short.
-Pick up dog/cat food bowls from outside.
-Keep your property free from objects snakes may like to hide in.
-Keep your dogs on lead around bushland

We would like to give a massive shoutout to Nicole Cross, who this week celebrated her 28th year at Baldivis Veterinary Hospital! 🥳

Second only to our founder, Dr Robert Davies, Nicole is the longest serving employee here at Baldivis Veterinary Hospital.

Nicole’s career at BVH originally started as an equine nurse. Although she still loves to help out in the barn, Nicole is now our assistant practice manager and does an incredible job ensuring that all areas of the practice run smoothly.

On behalf of all of the staff here Baldivis Veterinary Hospital, we would like to thank Nicole for her hard work and dedication to the practice which undoubtably wouldn’t be the same without her! 🥰

Requirements:
-Dog must between the ages of 2-7
-Up to date with vaccinations
-On no medications
-Of a relaxed nature

Blood donors play a critical role in saving lives here at the hospital and their time and that of their pawrents are so much appreciated. As a small token of our gratitude, all blood donors will receive a thank you credit to their BVH account!

Aside from dirty socks and undies, can you guess what one of our most commonly seen foreign bodies is?

ITS CORN! 🌽

Unlike many other vegetables, corn on the cobs do not digest in a dog’s stomach.

As a result, corn cobs which are ingested often cause internal blockages and perforation as they try to pass through the dog’s digestive system.

Our veterinary staff advise putting your corn cobs straight into your outside bin; out of reach from potential dumpster divers 🐶

As much as we love to keep our newsfeed filled with the cute and cuddly, we have something a little more sinister to share today.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen an unprecedented amount of grass seed injuries.
Other clinics have reported similar numbers and it is suspected that the wet weather could be to blame ☔️.

When ingested, grass seeds love to lodge themselves in the back of the throat. The seeds are often difficult to locate and like to hide within the folds around the tonsils. As can be seen in the photo below, patient Twix’s tonsils were very inflamed and irritated.

Clinic signs include dry wrenching and frequent attempts to clear the throat.

Grass seeds can be removed under sedation. However, prevention is always the best cure! Keep garden grass short and limit your dogs access to grassy, seedy areas 🌾
